For the past 34 years, we have learned from our participants that a necessary part of the LISBON SYMPOSIA is its location.
The various and varied locations for the social gatherings allow the possibility to sightsee some of Lisbon’s best features.
The symposia were conceived and founded by James H. Whitelaw, a pioneer in laser-based flow instrumentation who spent most of his career at the Imperial College in London. Professor Whitelaw formed an international organizing committee consisting of people who were experts mainly in the subject of laser Doppler anemometry and, indeed, the first several symposia focused specifically on its application, before growing into the array of topics we welcome today.
The selection of LISBON as a venue and Professor Durao and colleagues as local organizers proved to be a good choice. The meeting facilities at Gulbenkian Foundation comprised a fitting location and the Portuguese committee organized the meetings so well that holding the symposia elsewhere was never seriously considered.
